What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a familiar root word inside related forms such as looks, looked, and looking. They use the shared root and changing endings to understand how the words are connected.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can group common inflected forms under the correct root. The student explains what stays the same in meaning and what the ending changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every changed ending as a completely new word. They may remove letters that belong to the root or call the ending the root.

How to Assess It

Give students play, plays, played, and playing. Ask them to mark the root, identify each ending, and explain how the forms are related.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a word-family tree with a root card at the trunk and inflected forms on movable branches.

  2. Ask, ‘What stays the same in jump, jumps, jumped, and jumping, and what changes?’

  3. Play Root Family Sort by grouping mixed inflected forms beneath their shared root words.

  4. Collect action words from a class schedule and create past, present, or ongoing forms for each.
