What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write for different readers and goals. They plan, draft, review, revise, and edit, choosing the steps that fit the task. They improve both the message and its correctness.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select details, organization, and tone that fit a clear purpose and reader. They use feedback to improve meaning, then correct errors before sharing the final piece. They can explain why they made a revision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first draft as finished or focus only on spelling and punctuation. They may follow every writing step rigidly, even when a task needs a different approach. Some use the same tone and details for every reader.

How to Assess It

Ask students to write a note persuading the principal to add recess time. Require a brief plan, a draft, one labeled content revision, and one labeled edit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students color-coded sticky notes to plan ideas, draft a paragraph, mark a meaning change, and mark a correction.

  2. Ask students to compare a text message to a principal email and explain how audience changes word choice, detail, and tone.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams improve vague sentences for detail, order, clarity, and correctness at four stations.

  4. Have students write a school event announcement twice, once for classmates and once for families, then compare their choices.
