What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write stories, explanations, opinions, and practical messages for a clear reader and goal. They select useful planning, drafting, reviewing, revising, and editing steps instead of using one fixed routine.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a fitting form, tone, and level of detail for the reader and goal. They use rereading and feedback to improve meaning and organization, then correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may follow the same steps in the same order for every task. Some assume a first draft is finished if it has no obvious errors.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: List three details, then draft a four-sentence announcement inviting families to a reading night. Box one audience-focused revision and circle one editing correction.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a rough paragraph, scissors, and tape, then have them reorder sentences and replace two weak details for a named audience.

  2. Ask, "How would your message change for a friend, a principal, and a younger student?" Students name exact word and detail changes.

  3. Run Revision Relay: teams rotate through stations for focus, organization, evidence, word choice, and conventions, making one change at each.

  4. Students write a school lunch suggestion to the cafeteria manager, revise it after peer feedback, and edit a final email.
