What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan before drafting by identifying who will read the text and what the text should accomplish. They choose a writing mode, genre, and structure that fit that audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name an intended audience and purpose, then choose a fitting mode, genre, and structure. They can explain how each choice will help readers follow the message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a format because they like it, without considering the reader or goal. They may also confuse topic, genre, and structure or begin drafting without an organization plan.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “You want the principal to add playground shade. Choose a writing mode, genre, and structure, then explain each choice.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups audience, purpose, genre, and structure cards to match, then have them defend one complete set.

  2. Ask students to plan two texts about school lunch, one for classmates and one for the principal, and explain how their plans differ.

  3. Play Plan It Fast by reading a scenario and awarding points for a fitting mode, genre, structure, and clear reason.

  4. Have students plan a flyer for a school event, choosing headings, sections, and details that families will need.
