What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who will read a piece and what the writing should accomplish. They choose a fitting type of writing and map out how ideas will be arranged before drafting.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a writing situation, students select a fitting genre and structure. They create an outline and explain how their choices help the intended reader understand the message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a favorite format without considering the reader or goal. They may confuse genre with structure, or assume every piece needs five paragraphs.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Plan a text that convinces families to attend the school book fair. Name the genre, audience, and structure, then explain each choice.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sample texts, sticky notes, and purpose cards, then have them label each text’s audience, genre, and structure.

  2. Ask students to write which structure best fits a lost-pet notice and defend their choice with two reasons.

  3. Play Structure Match by pairing topic cards with sequence, compare-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, problem-solution, or description cards.

  4. Have students plan a brochure for new students, choosing sections and features that answer questions fifth graders would likely ask.
