What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write stories, explanations, opinions, and useful messages for different readers. They plan, draft, reread, revise ideas, and edit spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a useful planning method and write a clear draft for a named purpose and reader. They use feedback or a checklist to improve ideas, organization, word choice, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a first draft is finished writing. They often treat revising as correcting spelling only, or forget to adjust details and word choice for the intended reader.

How to Assess It

Ask students to write directions for making a sandwich. Collect a simple plan, a draft with one marked revision, and a final copy with spelling and punctuation edits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use a picture sequence to plan a story, draft it, then add one detail with a sticky note before editing.

  2. Compare two thank-you notes, one to a friend and one to the principal, and discuss how word choice changes for each reader.

  3. Play Revision Relay: partners draw a card asking them to add dialogue, clarify an event, replace a vague word, or fix punctuation.

  4. Write directions for a classroom job, ask a classmate to follow them, then revise any step that caused confusion.
