What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare for writing by listing what they know about a topic. They add useful details from a short text and from talking with classmates or the teacher.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student creates a useful list of ideas before drafting. The list includes relevant background knowledge, information learned from a text, and ideas gained through conversation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list only what they already know or copy full sentences from a source. They may also record every idea from a partner without checking whether it fits the topic.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph about animal shelters. Ask them to write one idea they already knew, one new fact from the paragraph, and one question for a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place topic cards, picture books, and sticky notes at tables, then have students record known facts and new facts in two columns.

  2. Ask, "What could we include in a class guide to caring for a pet?" Students discuss, then write three possible details.

  3. Play Idea Sort by having teams place fact cards under Already Knew, Learned from Reading, or Heard in Discussion.

  4. Plan a welcome note for a new student by recalling school routines, reading the schedule, and interviewing a classmate.
