What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop possible content before they draft. They draw on what they know, collect useful details from reading, and use peer talk to add or refine ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build a focused list of possible content before drafting. The list combines relevant personal knowledge, useful source details, and new thinking from conversation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat first thoughts as enough, without checking or expanding them through reading. They may copy details from sources or classmates instead of using those details to shape their own ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and ask them to list one idea from experience, one idea from the article, and one idea prompted by a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sticky notes to sort ideas from personal knowledge, a short text, and peer comments into three labeled columns.

  2. Ask students to write: Which source or classmate comment changed or added to your thinking, and how?

  3. Play Idea Relay, where teams read a paragraph, discuss it, and add one new supported writing idea each round.

  4. Use a school lunch proposal, with students reviewing a menu, sharing experiences, and collecting peer suggestions before planning their response.
