What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Before drafting, students identify what they already know and what they still need to learn about a topic. They use source details and classmates' perspectives to develop and refine possible content.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can create a focused list of possible points and label where each idea came from. They can explain how a text or conversation changed their thinking.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list unsupported opinions, copy source sentences, or collect facts unrelated to their purpose. They may record classmates' comments without using them to revise or add ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article about later school start times. After a two-minute partner talk, ask for three possible points and the source of each idea.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sticky notes to record prior knowledge, source facts, and peer ideas, then sort them into useful and less useful content.

  2. Ask, "Which idea became stronger after reading or talking with a classmate, and what changed?"

  3. Play Idea Relay, where teams read a short text and take turns adding relevant, nonrepeated ideas to a shared chart.

  4. Plan a class podcast segment by gathering background facts, reading one source, and interviewing a classmate before choosing the segment's main points.
