What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build a bank of possible content before drafting. They note what they already know, pull useful details from reading, and add ideas gained through conversation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a writing prompt, a student creates a focused idea list using personal knowledge, source details, and peer input. The student selects relevant details and explains how each could support the draft.

Common Misconceptions

Students may begin drafting after naming only what they already know. They may copy whole sentences from a source instead of recording useful details. They may repeat a partner’s idea without checking whether it fits the topic.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article about reducing cafeteria waste, then allow a two-minute partner talk. Collect an idea sheet with one existing idea, two text details, and one idea added after discussion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort sticky notes into already knew, learned from reading, and gained from discussion, then use one from each group to plan a paragraph.

  2. Read two short sources, then ask partners, Which detail changed or strengthened your idea, and why?

  3. Play Evidence Hunt, where teams find details for a writing prompt and earn points by explaining how each detail could be used.

  4. Plan a school garden proposal using campus observations, a seed catalog, and a brief interview with the custodian or garden club.
