What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a plan and gathered details into a complete first draft. They choose clear words and sentences, then add details, dialogue, labels, or comparisons that fit the purpose and reader.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a focused draft with ideas in a sensible order and enough information for the reader. Word choice and a craft move, such as dialogue or sensory detail, support the intended effect.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy planning notes as disconnected sentences or add every fact they collected. They may choose fancy words or dialogue that do not fit the purpose, or forget what the reader needs.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Use the notes “lost dog, red collar, last seen at park” to draft a four-sentence neighborhood notice. Include one useful detail and words aimed at neighbors.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards and sticky-note details, then have them arrange the ideas and draft a short story for kindergarten readers.

  2. Ask, “How would your words change if you explained recess rules to a new student instead of the principal?”

  3. Play Audience Match: students draw a purpose card and a reader card, then write two sentences that fit both.

  4. Have students write a class library recommendation for first graders, using one plot detail and one inviting craft move.
