What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread a draft and compare it with their reason for writing. They use their own judgment and feedback from others to identify what works and what needs changing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a specific sentence or detail helps the writing do its job. They can use self-review or peer feedback to name one useful change and explain why it would help.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus only on spelling and handwriting instead of whether the message is clear. They may accept every suggestion or describe writing only as “good” or “bad.” They may also forget to compare the draft with its original purpose.

How to Assess It

Ask students to reread a draft, underline one part that supports its purpose, and star one part that needs work. Have them complete: “My writing does its job because ___.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sticky notes to mark one part of a draft that works and one part that does not fit the writing goal.

  2. Ask students to write: “My reader needs to know or feel ___, and my draft helps by ___.”

  3. Play Feedback Sort by having teams place comment cards under useful, unclear, or unrelated, then explain each choice.

  4. Have students review a class invitation and decide whether it gives families enough information to attend the event.
