What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and use a clear goal to judge what works and what needs revision. They consider feedback and choose changes that better fit the intended reader and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the writing purpose, point to evidence in the draft, and explain whether each part supports that purpose. The student uses relevant feedback to make specific revisions and explains why those revisions improve the piece.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat fixing spelling and punctuation as the same as judging a draft's effectiveness. They may accept every suggestion, reject feedback without checking the goal, or call a draft good without citing evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students their draft, its stated goal, and one peer comment. Ask them to accept or reject the comment, revise one part, and explain how the change supports the goal.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs highlight sentences green if they support the writing goal and yellow if they need revision, then revise one yellow sentence.
Use the prompt: Which feedback will most improve your draft for its intended reader, and why?
Play Feedback Sort: teams place comment cards under useful, unclear, or off-goal, then defend each placement using the writing goal.
Compare two school event flyers, decide which better informs families, and revise one line from the weaker flyer.
