What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a completed draft and correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and sentence errors. They use editing marks, reference tools, and careful reading to prepare a clean final copy.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find and correct errors without changing the writer’s meaning. They can explain corrections using rules for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and complete sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may revise ideas when they should be checking language rules. They may rely on spell-check, overlook homophones, or change correct sentences. Some correct only spelling and miss punctuation, capitalization, agreement, and sentence errors.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with six errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, verb tense, and agreement. Ask them to rewrite it correctly and label each correction.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with editing errors, then have them mark corrections with colored pencils and rebuild each sentence correctly.
Ask students to explain which editing mistake most affects meaning, using examples from a sample paragraph.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in a projected paragraph and name the rule used.
Have students edit a mock school announcement before it is posted, checking names, dates, punctuation, spelling, and sentence clarity.
