What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread a completed draft and correct errors in grammar, usage, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure. They use reference tools when needed and check that corrections keep the intended meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently finds and fixes errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure. The student preserves the writer's meaning and can explain why each correction is needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse editing with revising ideas or adding details. They may rely only on spell-check, miss homophones, or correct punctuation without checking sentence boundaries and agreement.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-sentence paragraph with six errors in capitalization, punctuation, spelling, agreement, and sentence structure. Ask them to rewrite it correctly and circle each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print an error-filled paragraph, then have pairs use colored pencils to mark capitalization, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and sentence errors.

  2. Ask students which correction most improved clarity in a draft, then support their choice with the original and revised sentence.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time on sentence cards, then justify each change.

  4. Have students edit a mock school announcement before posting it, checking names, dates, punctuation, spelling, and complete sentences.
