What Students Need to Do

Students break spoken words into sounds and write letters or letter groups for those sounds. They apply taught spelling patterns when writing single words and connected sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students spell taught word patterns accurately in a word list and in sentences. They segment unfamiliar words, choose likely letter patterns, and reread to check their spelling.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell only the sounds they notice, leaving out vowels or parts of blends. They may choose a familiar spelling without checking the word’s vowel pattern, ending, or meaning.

How to Assess It

Dictate five words with recently taught patterns and one sentence containing two of those words. Ask students to underline the letters that represent each sound.

   Give students letter tiles and picture cards, then have them say, segment, build, and write each pictured word.

   Ask students to explain in writing why two words with the same sound may use different letter patterns.

   Play a pattern sort relay using word cards with vowel teams, blends, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels.

   Have students write a classroom supply list, then circle words they spelled by stretching the sounds.
