What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a two-syllable word, separate its syllables and sounds, then write the matching letters in order. They apply vowel patterns, consonant blends, silent e, and known high-frequency spellings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a spoken word, students spell both syllables without a model and underline the letters representing each vowel sound. They reread their spelling and fix omitted or misplaced letters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write one vowel when a vowel team is needed. They may drop a consonant from a blend or place silent e in the wrong syllable. They may spell a familiar high-frequency word only by sound instead of recalling its known pattern.
How to Assess It
- Dictate four two-syllable words, one for each target pattern, and a short sentence containing a high-frequency word. Students divide, spell, and circle each vowel pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles and picture cards. Students say each two-syllable word, build it syllable by syllable, then copy it.
Dictate a target word, then have students write it and explain which letters spell each vowel and consonant sound.
Play Pattern Sort Relay. Teams write each dictated word on a card, place it under the matching pattern heading, then check spellings.
Have students make a class sign or lunch-menu label using three correctly spelled two-syllable words from the week's list.
