What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spot vowel patterns, consonant groups, and silent e in two-syllable words. They divide words into readable parts, blend the sounds, and check the result in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student marks the useful letter pattern, separates a word into two spoken parts, and blends it without guessing. The student reads the word accurately alone and in a sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may separate letters that work together, such as vowel teams, blends, and digraphs. They may pronounce final silent e or guess the word after reading only the first syllable.
How to Assess It
- Give students four two-syllable words, one for each target pattern. Have them mark the spelling pattern, divide each word, and read all four aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Build words with letter tiles, draw a slash between syllables, underline vowel patterns, box consonant groups, and read each word aloud.
Ask, “Which letters helped you read this word, and where did you split it?” Students write an explanation and read the word.
Play Pattern Sort Relay: teams sort word cards by spelling pattern, then earn a point for each word they read correctly.
Collect target words from a lunch menu or school notice, highlight the useful spelling pattern, and practice reading the full line.
