What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use letter sounds, blends, silent e, and vowel teams to read one-syllable words. They blend from left to right instead of guessing from pictures or context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read unfamiliar one-syllable words by blending all sounds in order. They also read regularly spelled common words quickly, both alone and in a sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from a picture or the first letter instead of reading through the word. They may sound out silent e, split consonant blends, or use the wrong sound for a vowel team.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to read: am, go, cat, bike, ask, stop, hand, rain, plant. Then have the student read, “The plant is in the rain.”

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build am, go, cat, bike, stop, hand, rain, and plant, then have students read each word aloud.
Show rain and ran, then ask, “How does the spelling change the vowel sound?” Students explain orally or in writing.
Play word card bingo using one-syllable words, requiring students to read each covered word aloud before placing a marker.
Take a classroom label hunt, recording readable one-syllable words such as clock, desk, light, and shelf.
