What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to an unfamiliar made-up word, say its two syllables, and map each sound to letters. They choose the needed vowel spelling, final e, and consonant sequence, then write the whole word in order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student spells a dictated made-up word without relying on memory or meaning. The spelling shows both syllables, keeps consonant clusters intact, and uses the intended vowel pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count each vowel letter as a separate syllable, especially in vowel pairs or words ending in silent e. They may drop a consonant, reverse letters, or change the invented word into a familiar word.
How to Assess It
- Dictate four prepared made-up words, one for each required pattern. Students divide each word into syllables, write it, and underline the vowel spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles and blank sound boxes; dictate a made-up word, then have students build, split, and write it.
Ask, “Which letters show each syllable, and why?” Students write two sentences explaining one spelling choice.
Play Pattern Sort: students spell dictated made-up words on mini whiteboards, then place each board beside the matching pattern card.
Create pretend snack packages, dictate each product’s made-up name, and have students spell the name on a label.
