What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a made-up one-syllable word, stretch its sounds, and write letters for each sound. They spell words with short vowels, blends, final consonant groups, and silent e.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can spell dictated made-up words such as ib, dap, mape, isk, plim, nask, and framp. They represent each sound in order and keep consonant blends together.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write only the first and last sounds or drop a consonant from a blend. They may confuse short and long vowels, forget silent e, or add a vowel between two consonants.
How to Assess It
- Dictate ib, dap, mape, isk, plim, nask, and framp without showing them. Check whether every sound appears in the correct order.

Ways to Teach It
Have students push sound counters for each phoneme in a dictated made-up word, then replace the counters with magnetic letters.
Ask students to write which part of framp is hardest to hear, then explain how they checked every sound.
Play Pattern Roll: students roll a word-shape die, hear a matching made-up word, write it, and earn a point for each sound.
Students act as toy designers, invent product names with assigned sound patterns, and write labels for a classroom display.
