What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine unfamiliar two-syllable made-up words instead of relying on meaning or memory. They identify vowel spellings, use nearby consonants and silent e to divide the word, then blend both syllables aloud.
What Mastery Looks Like
- On a fresh word list, a student marks the vowel spellings, places a sensible syllable break, and reads each part accurately. The student blends both parts smoothly and checks the spelling after a misread.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a familiar word after seeing the first letters, even though the word is made up. They may split a vowel team, ignore final silent e, or place the syllable break incorrectly. Some read each syllable correctly but do not blend them smoothly.
How to Assess It
- Show four teacher-prepared two-syllable nonsense words, one for each target pattern. Say, "Mark the vowels, draw the syllable break, then read each word aloud."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles and four pattern cards; they build two-syllable nonsense words, mark the vowels, divide them, and blend each word aloud.
Ask, "Where would you split this made-up word, and which spelling rule supports your choice?" Students write two steps, then compare.
Play Pattern Sort: students draw a nonsense-word card, sort it by spelling pattern, divide it, read it, and earn a point.
Use a mock delivery route with made-up street names; students decode each street before tracing the driver’s route on a map.
