What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read unfamiliar grade-level words by matching letters and spelling patterns to sounds. They blend the sounds smoothly in isolated words and in complete sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads unfamiliar words by noticing spelling patterns, saying the sounds, and blending them in order. The student uses this process accurately in word lists and sentences without relying on pictures or guesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a word from its first letter, a picture, or the sentence instead of reading the whole word. They may treat every letter as a separate sound and miss digraphs, vowel teams, or endings. Some students blend each sound correctly but change the word when saying it quickly.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to read train, shout, farmer, and hopping aloud. Then have them read, “The farmer found a coin beside the road,” and circle two spelling patterns they used.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build rain, train, trail, and mail; students change one pattern, blend each word, and explain the sound shift.
Display “The goat floated near the shore.” Students mark vowel patterns, read it aloud, and explain how each pattern helped.
Play Phonics Sort Relay with cards for vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and endings; partners sort, read, and check each word.
Give students a simple lunch menu; they highlight unfamiliar words, mark known spelling patterns, and read their choices to a partner.
