What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect printed letters with their sounds and blend those sounds to read simple words. They decode words shown alone and inside short sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tracks each letter, says the matching sounds, and blends them into a whole word. The student uses the same process when reading words alone and in simple sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a word from the picture or first letter instead of reading every sound. They may say separate sounds correctly but struggle to blend them, especially with short vowels.
How to Assess It
- Show the words map, sit, and sun, then the sentence “I sit.” Ask each student to point, say the sounds, blend, and read.

Ways to Teach It
Give students magnetic letters to build map, sit, and sun, then have them touch each letter and blend the sounds aloud.
Ask, “How did you read the word cat?” Have students explain which sounds they noticed and how they blended them.
Play Spin and Read with onset and rime wheels, such as m, s, and p paired with at, it, and an.
Place labels such as bin, mat, and lid on classroom objects, then have pairs decode each label before finding its match.
