What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine familiar words and find the letter parts that match sounds they know. They remember the unexpected parts and use both to read the whole word.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point out the expected and unexpected letter parts in familiar words such as said, the, and was. The student uses both parts to read each word alone and in a sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the usual sound for every letter, such as reading said with the long a sound. They may guess from a picture or memorize the whole word without noticing which letters follow known patterns.

How to Assess It

Show the word said. Ask, “Point to the letters you can sound out. Which part must you remember? Now read the whole word.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build words like said, was, and the with magnetic letters, then place a heart counter under each unexpected letter part.

  2. Show the word said and ask, “Which letters have sounds we know, and which letter part must we remember?”

  3. Play Heart Word Bingo by calling words, having students read them, and covering matching words on their boards.

  4. Find common words on a classroom sign or lunch menu, then mark the parts that follow known sound patterns.
