What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the parts of a word that follow familiar sound patterns and the parts that do not. They use both parts to read words alone and in sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point out the regular and tricky parts in words such as “said,” “was,” and “come.” They read these words alone and in short sentences without guessing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may sound out every letter using its most common sound, such as reading “said” as “sade.” They may guess from pictures or memorize whole-word shapes instead of checking each part.

How to Assess It

Give students the words “said,” “was,” and “come.” Have them circle the tricky part, underline the regular parts, and read each word aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build “said,” “was,” and “come” with magnetic letters, then place a heart counter under each tricky part.

  2. Ask students to explain why “said” cannot be read using the usual sound for “ai.”

  3. Play Tricky Word Bingo using cards with familiar irregular words, and require students to read each selected word aloud.

  4. Read a lunch menu or classroom directions, then circle irregular words students need to recognize quickly.
