What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students spell familiar words whose sounds do not fully match common letter patterns, such as said, was, and one. They notice the unexpected letters and recall them when writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student accurately writes taught words such as said, was, one, and they in sentences and by themselves. The student can point out the unexpected letters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell only by sound, writing sed for said or wuz for was. They may also recognize a word while reading but misspell it from memory.

How to Assess It

Dictate, “I said the dog was here.” Ask students to write the sentence, then underline the words said and was.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build said, was, one, and they with magnetic letters, then cover each word and rebuild it from memory.

  2. Ask students to write, “The tricky part of said is ___ because ___,” then compare answers with a partner.

  3. Play word memory with matching cards, pairing each printed word with the same word missing its unexpected letters.

  4. Give students a simple lunch note to complete using the words you, are, and here, then check each spelling together.
