What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write familiar words such as “the,” “was,” and “said” from memory. They spell these words alone and use them correctly within short sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students spell taught words correctly from dictation and use them accurately in a short sentence. They remember the unexpected letter patterns without copying from a word wall.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell every word by sound, producing forms such as “sed” for “said” or “wuz” for “was.” They may also omit letters or reverse the letter order.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Dictate “the,” “was,” and “said,” then dictate “Sam said the dog was wet.” Score the three target words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students magnetic letters to build three taught words, then mix the letters and have them rebuild each word from memory.

  2. Ask, “Which part of ‘said’ is surprising?” Then have students explain the spelling and use the word in a sentence.

  3. Play a whiteboard challenge by saying one taught word at a time, having students write it, reveal it, and correct it.

  4. Have students write a short classroom reminder using three taught words, such as “The book was on the rug.”
