What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spot regular and unexpected letter patterns in words such as said, could, and again. They use known sound-spelling links for regular parts and remember the unusual parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads familiar high-frequency words quickly in a sentence and alone. When shown an irregular word, the student identifies the decodable chunks and points out the unexpected spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may try to sound out every letter using only common sound patterns. Others guess from the first letter or confuse similar words such as where, were, and we're.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words said, have, and could. Ask them to read each word, circle the regular part, underline the unexpected part, and read, “We could have said yes.”

Ways to Teach It
Build said, does, and could with letter tiles, then swap or mark the letters that represent unexpected sounds.
Ask students to explain why have cannot follow the usual silent-e pattern, using the sentence, “I have a red hat.”
Play Irregular Word Bingo with cards showing words such as once, again, because, and would, calling each word within a sentence.
Collect irregular words from classroom signs, menus, and schedules, then have students highlight the regular and unexpected parts.
