What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect letters and common letter patterns to sounds, then blend those sounds to read words. They use the same process with word lists and sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read unfamiliar one-syllable words by identifying sound patterns and blending smoothly. They notice and correct a word that does not match the letters or sentence meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the picture, first letter, or sentence instead of reading the whole word. They may separate digraphs like sh or add an extra vowel sound when blending consonants.
How to Assess It
- Give students four words, such as ship, stop, cake, and seed, plus the sentence “The frog sat on a rock.” Ask them to read each aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build map, then change one letter at a time to make mat, sat, sit, and sip.
Ask, “How are hop and hope different?” Have students write both words and explain what changed in the vowel sound.
Play a word-card sort where students read each card aloud and group words by blends, digraphs, or vowel patterns.
Have students find decodable words on classroom labels or a lunch menu, copy three, and mark each sound-spelling pattern.
