What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen for each sound in a word and write letters or letter teams that represent those sounds. They spell familiar one-syllable words alone and in short sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can segment a spoken word, record sounds in order, and use taught patterns such as digraphs, blends, and silent e. The student rereads and corrects spellings that do not match the sounds.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may record only the first and last sounds, reverse sound order, or use letter names instead of letter sounds. They may split blends, miss digraphs, or expect every word to follow a regular spelling pattern.
How to Assess It
- Dictate five words using taught patterns, such as ship, clap, and made. Then dictate, “I made a ship,” and check spelling, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.

Ways to Teach It
Give students sound boxes and letter tiles; say five words, and have them push and place one spelling for each sound.
Ask, “How did you decide how to spell chop?” Students write the word, then explain each letter choice to a partner.
Play Phonics Relay: teams hear a word, segment it aloud, write it, and earn a point for matching every sound.
Create a classroom grocery list from package pictures, with students stretching each item name and using taught patterns to spell it.
