What Students Need to Do

Students stretch spoken words, identify sounds in order, and write letters that match those sounds. They spell taught word patterns alone and while writing labels or simple sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a word such as map, a student segments /m/ /a/ /p/ and writes the matching letters in order. In labels and sentences, the student uses taught sound patterns to spell familiar words and make readable attempts at new words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may record only the first or last sound and leave out the middle vowel. They may confuse letter names with sounds or expect every word to follow a simple sound pattern.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a map. Ask students to write map, then complete the sentence frame, “I see a ___.”

   Give students sound boxes, counters, and letter tiles to segment and build CVC words such as sun, map, and pig.

   Say a CVC word and ask, “What sound do you hear first, in the middle, and last?” Students explain their letter choices.

3. 03

   Play Roll and Spell using picture cards and a number cube, with students stretching and writing each selected word.

4. 04

   Set up a classroom label hunt where students choose three objects, say each name slowly, and write a label using heard sounds.
