What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the two spoken parts in a word and notice the vowel pattern in each part. They read each syllable, then blend the parts into a whole word.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students divide words such as rabbit, robot, and cupcake into useful syllables. They apply the vowel pattern in each part and blend the parts smoothly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split a word after every consonant or guess from the first syllable. They may also count silent e as another syllable or confuse short and long vowel sounds.

How to Assess It

Have each student mark the syllable break and read napkin, robot, and cupcake, then read, “The robot has a napkin.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use magnetic letters to build sunset, rabbit, robot, and cupcake, then separate each word into syllables and read both parts.

  2. Ask, “How does splitting robot into ro and bot help you read it?” and have students explain the vowel sounds.

  3. Play Syllable Sort by placing word cards under headings for closed, open, and silent-e syllables, then reading each word aloud.

  4. Search a lunch menu, classroom signs, or book covers for two-syllable words, mark each break, and read the words to a partner.
