What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen for the two syllables in a word and identify the vowel pattern in each part. They spell each syllable, combine the parts, and check the full word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately spell familiar and unfamiliar two-syllable words with different vowel patterns. They can divide each word and explain how the syllable types guided their spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit a vowel in an unstressed syllable, such as writing “camra” for “camera.” They may also use one familiar pattern for every syllable or split a word in the wrong place.
How to Assess It
- Dictate rabbit, robot, cupcake, rainbow, corner, and candle. Have students spell each word, divide it into syllables, and circle each vowel pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles and picture cards for rabbit, robot, cupcake, rainbow, corner, and candle, then have them build and divide each word.
Ask students to compare robot and rabbit, then write which vowel clues help them spell the first syllable of each word.
Play syllable match by having students pair cards such as rain and bow, cup and cake, or can and dle, then spell each word.
Use words from a lunch menu or school signs, and have students copy, divide, and label five two-syllable words.
