Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students take part in simple group decisions and explain ways people can help at school or in the community. They listen, share an opinion, vote, and follow the group’s choice.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can state a choice, give a simple reason, and cast one vote. The student can name a helpful action and accept a fair group decision.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think voting means everyone gets their first choice or that the winning choice is always better. They may think only adults participate or that listening and helping do not count.
How to Assess It: Offer two choices for a class read-aloud. Have each student vote, explain the choice, and tell what the class should do after votes are counted.

Lesson moves

Let students place counters beside two class choices, count the votes, announce the result, and carry out the winning choice.
Ask, “How can a kindergartner help make our classroom better?” and have students draw one action and dictate a sentence.
Read school scenario cards and let teams earn a point by naming a fair way to participate in each situation.
Take a school walk, identify one shared problem, and create a class suggestion to give the principal or custodian.
