What Students Need to Do: Students identify voting, taking turns, and reaching agreement as ways a class, family, or team can choose. They explain how each method leads to one group choice.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a class choice, students can suggest a fair method and explain what everyone will do. They can participate in a vote or discussion and accept the result.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the loudest person or the leader always decides. They may also think a decision is unfair when their preferred choice does not win.
How to Assess It: Ask: “Our class must choose between two books. Name one way we could choose, and tell what the class would do.”

Lesson moves

Give each child one counter to place beside a snack choice, then count counters and announce the choice with most votes.
Ask, “Should the class vote or take turns when choosing the read-aloud book?” Students state a choice and give one reason.
Sort picture cards showing classroom choices into vote, take turns, or agree together, then explain one match to a partner.
Plan a pretend family picnic by having small groups choose one food through discussion, then report how they reached agreement.
