What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify risks in everyday choices and predict what might happen. They explain whether a person accepts the risk, avoids it, or takes steps to reduce possible harm or loss.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly sort choices as accepting, avoiding, or reducing risk and explain their reasoning. They can give examples, such as wearing a helmet to reduce injury or leaving valuables home to avoid loss.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think reducing risk removes all chance of harm. They may also confuse accepting a risk with ignoring it, or believe insurance prevents accidents rather than limiting financial loss.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Leo wants to take a new soccer ball to the park. Write one way to accept, avoid, and reduce the risk of losing it.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups scenario cards to sort into accept, avoid, or reduce risk, then have them explain two placements.

  2. Ask students to write which risk choice they would make before a rainy bike ride and explain why.

  3. Play Risk Choice Charades, where students act out a decision and classmates name whether it accepts, avoids, or reduces risk.

  4. Compare a bicycle helmet, phone case, and insurance card, then discuss what risk each item reduces and what it cannot prevent.
