What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name fair steps for making a choice alone or with others. They listen to reasons, consider how choices affect people, and reach agreement or vote.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a simple classroom problem, a student can describe what each person should do before making a choice. The student explains why listening, taking turns, and accepting the result help the group.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the loudest person, the first person, or the oldest person should decide. They may also think fair means everyone gets exactly what they want.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Three students want to play different games. Write or draw two fair steps they can use to choose one game.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each group three picture books, then have students hear one reason per person, vote, and explain why the process was fair.

  2. Prompt students to draw or write: “How can four classmates responsibly choose one playground game when they want different games?”

  3. Sort scenario cards into fair and unfair choices, then let pairs earn a point by explaining one card correctly.

  4. Plan the next indoor recess activity from three options, using a preference chart and a vote after everyone shares a reason.
