What Students Need to Do: Students recognize when there is not enough of an item, money, or time for every possible use. They explain why someone must choose one option over another.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a simple situation, a student identifies what is limited and names a choice that must be made. The student can tell what someone gets and gives up.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think limited means none is available, rather than not enough for every use. They may suggest getting more without considering the limit. Some confuse a want with a need.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Two children want the last apple. What is limited, and what choice could they make?”

Lesson moves

Give each group three sheets of colored paper for five students, then have them decide how to use the paper for a collage.
Ask, “Our class has one computer and three students want it. What choices could we make, and why?”
Have pairs sort picture cards into “choice needed” and “no choice needed,” then explain one card from each group.
Give students five counters and a grocery flyer, then have them choose which pictured foods to buy within their counter limit.
