What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that people do jobs to earn money. They connect earned money with buying needs, such as food, and wants, such as toys.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a job, describe the work, and tell why the worker earns money. The student can give examples of purchases.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money comes freely from banks, cards, or machines. They may also think every desired item is a need or that all work is paid.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a nurse working, money, groceries, and a toy. Ask students to put them in order and explain the connection.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom store where students complete simple jobs, earn play coins, and choose an item to buy.
Ask, "What job could you do, and what need or want would you buy with your earnings?"
Play a matching game with job cards, money cards, and pictures of needs and wants.
Examine a grocery receipt and discuss how a worker might earn money to pay for the listed food.
