What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify money as a way people pay for objects and work done by others. They recognize examples such as buying food or paying for a haircut.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can look at a buying situation and explain who pays and what is received. The student can tell whether the payment is for an object or a service.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money is only used to buy objects, not to pay for work such as haircuts. They may also think any amount of money can buy anything.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a child buying an apple and an adult paying for a car wash. Ask students to circle the money and explain what each person receives.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom shop and shoe-cleaning station, then have students use play money to pay for an object and a service.
Ask how paying for a sandwich differs from paying for a haircut, then record student answers in a goods and services chart.
Play a card-matching game where students pair a buyer, money, and the good or service received.
Study a grocery receipt and a salon price list, then identify what people paid for in each place.
