What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify goods and services that the United States buys from or sells to other countries. They explain that trade moves products, work, or money across national borders.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can decide whether an example shows international trade and name what crosses the border. They can describe what the United States and the other country each receive.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think everything sold in the United States was made here. They may also think trade only involves goods, only involves buying, or always means swapping items without money.

How to Assess It

Give this exit prompt: “The United States buys coffee from Colombia, and a U.S. designer makes a logo for a Japanese company. Explain how each example shows international trade.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs country cards, product cards, and yarn, then have students connect each country to the United States and describe what moves.

  2. Ask, “Why might countries trade for bananas or computer services?” and have students write two sentences naming what each country receives.

  3. Sort scenario cards into “international trade” and “not international trade,” then have students explain one choice to a partner.

  4. Inspect country-of-origin labels on classroom items, locate three countries on a map, and draw arrows from those countries to the United States.
