What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how trade, exchange rates, tariffs, and global supply chains connect U.S. consumers and producers with other countries. They use evidence to predict effects on prices, jobs, businesses, and trade.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a product from foreign materials or production to its sale in the United States. They can explain how a tariff or exchange-rate change affects buyers and sellers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all imports cost U.S. jobs or that all exports help every American. They may confuse a trade deficit with debt and reverse how exchange-rate changes affect prices.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: The United States adds a tariff to imported shoes. Explain one likely effect on shoe prices, U.S. producers, and consumers.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups product packages and a world map; students trace origins, shipping routes, and where U.S. businesses add value.
Ask students to write: Should the United States limit imports that compete with American products? Support your answer with two economic effects.
Run a trade game with country cards, tokens, tariff cards, and exchange-rate cards; teams record who gains, who pays, and why.
Use a store circular to identify imported products, then discuss how shipping costs or currency changes could affect their prices.
