What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify imports and exports and explain how American consumers, workers, and businesses take part in global trade. They predict how supply, demand, trade barriers, and currency values can affect prices and jobs.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a product label or trade scenario, students can classify the exchange as an import or export and identify who benefits. They can explain one likely effect of a tariff, shortage, or currency change using evidence from the scenario.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse imports and exports because they ignore which country is buying. They may think imports always hurt the economy, exports always help everyone, or the United States produces everything it consumes.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A Florida company buys coffee from Brazil, then a new tariff raises its cost. Is the coffee an import, and what may happen to its price?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs inspect product labels, place origin stickers on a world map, and connect each country to the United States with yarn.

  2. Ask students to write whether limiting imported shoes would help or hurt American shoppers, workers, and businesses, using two specific effects.

  3. Run an import-export sorting relay with scenario cards, then award a point when teams correctly explain each choice from the United States perspective.

  4. Compare prices for one locally made item and one imported item, then list factors that may explain the difference.
