What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how scarcity, choice, incentives, private property, competition, supply, and demand shape economic decisions. They use these ideas to predict changes in prices and production.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can analyze a market scenario, identify the economic forces at work, and support a prediction with evidence. They can also distinguish a market economy from command and traditional systems.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a market economy is simply buying goods at a physical market. They may assume sellers control prices alone or that free markets have no government rules.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A drought reduces the orange crop, but demand stays steady. Predict what happens to price and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a classroom market where students trade limited supplies using tokens, then graph how prices change across trading rounds.

  2. Ask students to write which factor most affects consumer choices: price, need, advertising, or income, and defend their answer.

  3. Play a card sort where teams match economic scenarios with scarcity, incentive, competition, supply, demand, or private property.

  4. Have students compare prices for one grocery item across three stores and explain how competition may affect each price.
