What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how households, businesses, banks, and government interact through markets. They trace how money, goods, services, labor, taxes, and public spending move through the economy.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label the main participants in a circular flow diagram and explain each participant's role. The student can predict how a change in spending, production, or employment affects other parts of the economy.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the economy is controlled only by the federal government or that money flows in just one direction. They may confuse revenue with profit or assume every price increase is caused by taxes.

How to Assess It

Give students an unlabeled circular flow diagram. Ask them to label households, businesses, government, and banks, then explain two exchanges shown by the arrows.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use role cards and tokens to model wages, purchases, savings, loans, taxes, and government spending among households, businesses, banks, and government.

  2. Ask students to explain what might happen to workers, stores, banks, and tax revenue when a local factory closes.

  3. Have teams sort transaction cards by participant, then earn points for correctly naming what moves between each pair.

  4. Students examine a store receipt and sample pay stub to identify income, spending, taxes, and connections to the wider economy.
