What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how African Americans, Native peoples, and immigrant communities contributed labor, skills, inventions, businesses, and trade networks. They also assess how laws, discrimination, and forced labor shaped economic growth.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use evidence to connect a group’s work to a specific industry, product, or region. They explain who gained wealth and how unequal laws limited workers’ choices and rewards.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reduce African American economic history to plantation labor or assume enslaved workers received wages. They may treat all groups as having the same legal status or mistake economic contribution for equal access to wealth.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “The work of ___ helped the economy by ___, but ___ limited the group’s economic opportunities.” Require one fact from a class source.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs worker, product, and region cards, then have them build and explain three accurate economic contribution chains.
Ask students to write: How can a group build national wealth while being denied wages, land, citizenship, or fair contracts?
Run a source-match relay where teams pair evidence cards with the correct group, industry, and economic effect.
Trace one local crop, railroad, port, or business and identify which minority communities helped it grow.
