What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how westward expansion caused voluntary and forced migration among Native nations, enslaved African Americans, and other minority groups. They connect movement, displacement, and settlement to changes in language, religion, family life, work, and community traditions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students compare the experiences of at least two groups using specific events, routes, or policies. They explain both where people moved and how cultural practices were disrupted, preserved, or adapted.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all westward migration as voluntary or assume every group had the same experience. They may also think Native cultures disappeared completely or overlook the westward spread of slavery.
How to Assess It
- Give students a westward expansion map and a short primary source. Ask them to identify one migration pattern and explain one cultural impact using evidence from both items.
