What Students Need to Do

Students explain how scarcity, choice, opportunity cost, supply, demand, competition, and profit shape economic decisions. They use simple examples to show how buyers and sellers influence prices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify producers, consumers, costs, benefits, and incentives in a market scenario. They can predict how a change in supply or demand may affect price and quantity sold.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think sellers set any price they want or that high demand always means low prices. They may also confuse scarcity with a temporary shortage and overlook the tradeoff in every choice.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: A storm destroys half the orange crop while demand stays the same. Predict what happens to orange prices and explain why.

   Run a classroom market where students buy and sell paper snacks using play money, then graph each round's prices.

   Ask students to write which lunch choice has the greater opportunity cost and defend their answer with one tradeoff.
