What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how materials, worker skills, tools, productivity, and access to land can raise the amount an economy produces. They examine how forced labor created wealth for enslavers while causing profound human harm.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can read an economic scenario, identify the growth factor, and explain the cause-and-effect link. They can distinguish greater economic output from fair treatment or shared prosperity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think economic growth means everyone becomes wealthier. They may confuse productivity with simply working longer. They may discuss slavery only as a source of profit and overlook exploitation, violence, and unequal benefits.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A town opens a school, adopts faster farm tools, and gains access to iron deposits. Choose two changes, name each growth factor, and explain how it could increase output.

Ways to Teach It
Sort scenario cards into resources, productivity, education, technology, forced labor, and territorial expansion, then build a cause-and-effect chain with each card.
Discuss whether economic growth benefits everyone, using plantation profits and the experiences of enslaved people as evidence.
Play a matching relay where teams pair six growth-factor cards with examples and explain each match for a point.
Compare two local job postings, then identify how education or technology could help each worker produce more.
